To get to single user mode, if you’re using LILO, type:

        linux single

at the boot prompt and hit ENTER.

If you’re using GRUB, hit ENTER at the countdown screen (booting kernel-whatever in 10 seconds…), select your kernel from the menu (the line that starts with “kernel”) and hit e. At the end of the line, add:


don’t forget the space before the word “single”. Hit ENTER, then b

Once you’re dropped to a command line, enter:


and hit enter to change your root password. You can then either reboot to get back to your regular operating mode, or type:

     init N

Replace N with the right runlevel for your system (either 3 if X doesn’t start automatically, or 5 if it does)
